Dr. Francesco Ferrini: The broadening and proliferation of arboriculture & urban forestry programs
Monday, 10:45-11:15 am
Monday, 10:45-11:15 am
As academic disciplines, arboriculture and urban forestry are increasingly associated with the terms “ecosystem services,” “green infrastructure,” “nature-based solutions,” and “human health and well-being.” This broadening of the fields has led to new university programs, particularly in those countries where arboriculture and urban forestry are considered quite new. The integration of these new terms has also lead to greater involvement of the medical, economic and social sciences. This presentation will provide an update on the progress of the arboriculture and urban forestry disciplines and will explore how they are connected to the U.N.’s 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. Examples of “positive contamination” between different fields of teaching will be given.
Dr. Francesco Ferrini is Professor of Arboriculture and Dean of the School of Agriculture, Food, Environment, & Forestry, at the Università di Firenze in Italy. |

Monday, 11:45-12:15 pm
A most dramatic change in the last three decades, in developed countries as in developing countries, has been the rise of urban forestry. Correspondingly, urban forestry education, which can be broadly defined as the education with focus on diverse interdisciplinary topics like planning, design, selection, establishment and management of (peri)urban forests, has been booming. In this talk, I will discuss the development of higher education in urban forestry from a global perspective, and highlight the importance of multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in urban forestry education.
